Fashion Your Future: Advice!

Bath In Fashion
Fashion Your Future
Saturday 20th April

As part of the week long events that made up this years exciting Bath In Fashion I attended the industry insights talk Fashion Your Future. This offered students and members of the fashion world an indepth look at the many different roles that a career in fashion can bring, from an Assistant Buyer at Liberty, Fashion Features Assistant at Vogue to Product Development and Designer at Ben Sherman and Tom Ford. It was excellent to hear first-hand the demands of each sector, and interestingly how they constantly intertwine to continue the constantly moving fashion cycle. I think all those who attended the event left with a fashion buzz, especially as the panellists took time afterwards to discuss questions individually.

Amongst all the great advice they offered there were however two pieces of advice which all fashion/textiles folk should remember, (no matter how much those deadlines are piling up!)

1. Experience is worth its weight in gold. Naomi Smart.
and
2. At the end of the day... its just clothes! We aren't doctors saving lives, if you're interning and there's pressure from the top on you just remember its just clothes.
Marie Baluti.

I quite like this new mantra, 3 weeks of Final Major Project left, lets get it done!

Just a few snaps from Somerset House's latest exhibition Wool House in collaboration with The Campagin for Wool innitiative.

Highlighting the current resurgence in popularity of British wool, this exhibition aimed to further promote the quality, versatility and importance of the material, with artists using it in ways previously considered rather unorthodox.

From Saville Row tailoring to wall installations the show offered a vast amount of inspiration for textures, textiles and beautiful room styling! My favourite interior, The Modern Room, was created by AnneKyyroQuinn. Her clean and colourful furnishings and wall interiors would look great in any contemporary space, showing the revived modernity of the material.
Sadly the exhibition has now finished (13th-24th March) but all exhibitor information and details about The Campaign for Wool can be found at http://www.campaignforwool.org/wool-house/contributors/.

Kinetica Art Fair 2013

digital media/design innovation/LIGHTS!

I recently visited the annual Kinetica Art Fair at the Ambika P3, NW1 5LS. The futuristic exhibition brought the basement gallery to life with a mass of energy and technology. Many of the pieces emphasised an interactive relationship between object and viewer, encouraging visitors to become part of the art, where others created engrossing visual projections through holograms, strobe lighting and light refraction techniques.

I am currently working on a modern engineering influenced collection, combining hand drawn artworks with industrially based materials, and found a wealth of inspiration at the show, I hope you find it as exciting as I did!

Andrew Marr on the contribution of the design sector to the economy.

Interesting broadcast on Andrew Marr’s Start the Week, (BBC Radio 4, 19/11/2012).

With guests Sir Christopher Frayling, Antony Gormley, Sarah Teasley and Ron Arad, Marr discusses the processes of art and design schools, the function of design in society and how the sector can positively contribute to the UK economy.

From a designers point of view I found listening to the guest’s perspectives rather inspiring, particularly 09:00 – 14:00 mins somewhat sums up the life of a design student. I recommend a listen!

Otterton Mill, Devon

Sunday's sunny autumnal weather gave the perfect opportunity for a refreshing trip to the beach. A favourite spot in Devon for coastal walks is quaint Budleigh Salterton. Whilst the bay offers a great hideout for fishing the river trail to Otterton village is also beautiful all year round.

Soft leather bound journals in vivid colours to brighten up any bookshelf.

Sunset over the seafront.

This is my favourite store in Budleigh town. The Rowan Tree has an excellent range of baking essentials, interior decorations, classic furnishings and childrens gifts.

My theme for the day was sourcing unique metal and wooden gift tags, Otterton and The Rowan Tree had a great selection, these were my favourites.
I plan to keep collecting and make a display of the best colours and patterns!
